When you first open a tin of Peterson Sherlock Holmes there is a wonderful tangy aroma that reminds me of lemongrass and apricots. It has a hint of the Grousemoor scent but not as strong. This Virginia/Burley blend some consider an aromatic but I find that the topping is light and there is no syrupy sweetness. It is very easy to smoke straight from the tin and is easy to light and to stay lit.
Although there are definitely citrus flavours, the first first flavour I always seem to encounter is subtle cocoa. In some ways this blend reminds me of Royal Yacht by Dunhill but with not as much nicotine. I did find that this pipe tobacco can bite, but if you take your time and sip this tobacco you will stop any tongue burn and also find more flavour.
The cocoa/chocolate that I experience compliments the bread like quality that come from the Virginias; almost like a pain au chocolat! But this starts to fade and the tangy, citrus notes come through beautifully. As with the tin note there are reminiscences of Grousemoor but not as overpowering in taste. This is a very satisfying smoke if you like mild flavours and enjoy taking your time with a good pipe tobacco.
The casing gets a little milder from mid-bowl and you then get the Virginia/Burley come through. The Burley definitely has a nutty quality of almonds and maybe hazelnut and I can feel the burley at the back of my throat which could be the higher pH levels contained in burley tobacco.
Peterson Sherlock Holmes is a nice change of pace if you want a light aromatic with a fairly good nicotine content. I found it complimented tea very nicely as coffee would overpower the flavours on the palate. A nice pipe tobacco for slow contemplation at any time of day.
