“THE BRIAR SPELL”

From my steps in the block where I live
I saw in the wedge of midnight blue
Sky, that had but one star to give
A button of brilliance, blazing true
As the smoke from my briar licked the air
And the wet wind of evening grew chilly there
Hot grew the pot as it burned in my hand
Hot was the star so cold to the eye
We measure our days when we understand
That life is a dream and a changing sky
My pipe is a comfort in lonely hours
When clouds blot stars and winds bring showers
The bliss in darkness is holding the light
Is tamping the bowl with tobacco to smell
The people that loved it were true delight
They passed me at leisure, were touched by its spell
On their way, so the world is a lovely place
When sipping the briar in truth and grace
