Dunhill De Luxe Navy Rolls – Product Review

Dunhill De Luxe navy Rolls is another great Virginia/Perique pipe tobacco that is both mild and satisfying. As I now come to expect from Dunhill pipe tobaccos, the tin presentation is first class and the small discs of tobacco are beautifully laid out.
The discs can be rubbed out or folded; I tend to fold a disc and then sprinkle some loose tobacco on the top as kindling. This pipe tobacco is smokeable straight from the tin, is easy to light and stays lit throughout the smoke.
The tin note does remind me of Dunhill Flake, a beautifully sweet fig with fresh hay. The flavours are beautifully balanced throughout the smoke and I would say that there is more nicotine here than Rattray’s Old Gowrie. I also get more perique flavour with Dunhill De Luxe Navy Rolls. There is more of a peppery tang to the smoke, yet the perique is not overpowering but a little more noticeable. The sweetness from the Virginia has a beautiful bread like quality with some yeasty undertones. I do find that Dunhill De Luxe Navy Rolls are more tangy and citrusy than Rattray’s VaPers and not as sugary- sweet as Old Gowrie, although sweetness does comes through later on in the smoke.
This is high quality pipe tobacco that burns to a fine, white ash and leaves little moisture behind. It is certainly different enough to the Rattray’s VaPers to warrant trying. So, if you want more sweetness in your VaPer, Old Gowrie might be a good starting point. If you like stronger perique taste with extra nicotine then do try Dunhill De Luxe Navy Rolls.
