With every rung, a song was sung
In climbing up to Reuben
To overcome my fear
My dread of heights
But lights of warmth
Were waiting there
Clouds cupped in gold
A sun so born of colour corn
The sky a radius of blue
And earth banks glossed a beryl green
I lit my pipe
Relaxed against the scaffold bars
The silent stars which dust the night
Were sleeping out of view
We talked
From different worlds away we were
To find some common ground up there
On boards and planks
With thoughts of thanks
Where angels stop to stare
Descent was slow
But blessing shared was faith imbued
And comfort with a smoke
The light of life itself renewed
Faith solid as an oak
And rich, sweet tobacco
