Robert McConnell’s Glen Piper – Product Review

The smell from Glen Piper brings one thing to mind: Christmas. It smells sweet, rummy and lovely! It’s presented as acoarse ribbon/well broken flake, is dark brown, and has a perfect hydration for abrupt smoking when fresh; there’s no drying time needed. So, it’s a case of: open it, pack it, light it, puff it!
Let’s get the only negative out there first: it can be too warm on the burn. But, if treated with respect, and puffed with the correct cadence, it generates a very decadent smoke. What do I, and most folks, love about Christmas? Food, alcohol and general indulgence! This would make a brilliant seasonal blend: the smoke has dark fruit, plenty of rum, and a generous sweetness; reminiscent of marzipan. Glen Piper is more about the toppings than the tobaccos, albeit, the tobaccos form a solid base. In the lead we have the standard, for an aromatic, Virginia and black Cavendish, but these are given a boost by the (often disputed) Perique and Kentucky. Although, among the pipe forums, there’s much equivocation regarding the Perique content, when it’s looked for a subtle ‘ting’ can be noticed on the palate. The nicotine falls just below medium, but it isn’t so mild as to go unnoticed. The room-note? Again, it brings out the Christmas spirit!
A smoke that was made to pair with a nice mince pie and a good tipple; cheers Glen’!
