Although Dunhill’s My Mixture 965 is not an everyday smoke for me, when I do indulge in this fine pipe tobacco it is quite an experience. The tin note is a tantalizing combination of figs and lapsang souchong tea!
On the first light of My Mixture 965 you are greeted with a fine, smoky latakia flavour; this reminds me of the lapsang souchong, a beautiful Chinese, smoky tea. Sometimes it is very hard to describe the room note, but for me I have wonderful images of campfires and autumn. Then, behind the latakia, comes a very subtle sweetness, which tastes a little bit of dried fig and dark molasses. Fairly early on in the smoke I can feel the nicotine; not as much as Royal Yacht but still noticeable and more so than Rattray’s Old Gowrie.
As you continue smoking, the latakia fades a little but is still there; but now the subtle sweetness comes through. Here the aroma takes me to bookshops and fine leather, which is very hard to describe as a flavor. It is almost ‘peaty’ and reminds me of a peaty whisky (Jura Superstition for example). I am sure that this would accompany My Mixture 965 very well along with some dark chocolate as this does feel like a luxurious smoke.
Towards the end of the bowl the latakia is more subtle and the tobacco is still very smooth with all the flavors integrating into a very satisfying smoke with no harshness or bitterness. This definitely is a tobacco that one needs to spend time with to explore all the flavors that come through.
For me, Dunhill’s My Mixture 965 is a very nice evening smoke where I can sit for a while and drift off into a world of books, camp fires and peat. Hard to explain, but must be experienced.
